Rainy Day Activity: Homemade Finger Paint

Today is a beautiful rainy day but being stuck inside all day can be difficult for a little one.  I stumbled across this awesome recipe for Homemade paint and thought I would share it.

Flour Finger paint

1 cup flour
2 tablespoons salt
1 1/2 cups cold water
Wire whisk
1 1/2 cups hot water
Food coloring or tempera paint

Put flour and salt in saucepan. Mix together.
Add cold water and beat with whisk until smooth. Make sure to get all the lumps out.
Add hot water and boil until mixture is thick.  Remove from heat.
Beat again until smooth.
Color as desired with food coloring or powdered tempera paint.
Store covered in refrigerator.

I really liked the consistency of this finger paint.  It was very thick and easy to work with. The clean up was easy too! And don't worry if you little one tries to taste it, it's obviously safe, although, they probably won't like it...very salty!

Emily loved mixing the colors and squishing them between her fingers. I definitely recommend having a large towel near by to quickly wipe off their hands if they make a run for it. Actually, I probably should have just sat her in the high chair to help contain her AND the mess...next time!

This activity is great in helping develop gross and fine motor skills, creativity and expression and exploring new textures.

Still not convinced you want to give it a try? Call me and we can schedule an activity/craft play date!!! lol
